@MrJohnboyofsj That’s the idle gear. The engine spins one direction, the countershaft (or layshaft) spins the opposite direction. This layshaft is connected to the output shaft of the transmission, which will now spin the direction of the engine. By adding the idle gear within this process, the transmission output shaft will rotate in the opposite direction of the engine output (reverse).

@MrJohnboyofsj : How come it looks like the reverse is connecting 3 gears that just puts it back to foreword?
1) Forward is a direction. Foreword is what a book has before the chapters.
2) The 3rd cog acts to counteract the direction of the second one.
Left right left (where RIGHT is forward)
cog 1 is LEFT ( the engine spinning counter clockwise/reverse)
cog 2 is right (clockwise/forward)
cog 3 is left (counter clockwise or reverse)
