Auto Repair: Change Belt Tensioner Pulley Ford Explorer Ranger Mountaineer 4.0L 93-01 – 1AAuto.com

www.1aauto.com 1A Auto shows you how to remove and replace a serpentine belt tensioner on a 1998 Ford Explorer. This part is the same for Ford Explorer 1993-2000, Aerostar 1996-1997, Ranger 1993-2001, Mercury Mountaineer 1998-1999, Mazda Navajo 1993-1994, and B4000 Pickup 1994-2001. However, the procedure may vary some from vehicle to vehicle.

Thank you very much for this helpful tutorial. I just spent the last two hours performing this task. My tensioner was OEM on a 94 Explorer and the bolt was VERY hard to budge. Wound up using a tensioner removal tool to break the bolt free and a LOT of turns on the ratchet. Getting the bolt to re-thread can also be a task… Again, thank you!
great video, thank you
Great video – answers all those little questions. My job went perfect. Thanks!!

@youpaynow78 If memory serves me correct this is an ohv motor. The tensioner is the same for both so the process is about the same. Location of the parts may be a little different.
sohc or ohv
Thank you so much, I am going to attempt to change the belt with my son. The dealer quoted us around 150 but by the looks of it we might be able to do it
wow, thank you SO much. Today, when I started the car I heard a klunk and found half of the tensioner on the ground. I usually do the work myself when I can..and people are shocked that a woman works on her own car. Haven’t checked it out in the daylight…yet., but this is very well done and at least I understand what needs done. Thank you!!
thanks big time!
the shop quoted me 400 to change the idler pulley, tensioner, and serpentine.
i did it myself in about 2 hours, for 80 bucks in parts!
your video walked me right through it
